Rowling read for a BA in French and Classics at the University of Exeter, .She considers that studying franch was a mistake ,yet she felt obliged by her parents, she had to spend a year of study in Paris,as a part of her course. Once she finished university she moved to London to work as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International doing research into human rights abuses in Francophone Africa.In 1990 she moves to Manchester with her boyfriend,and it was in one of her trips to Manchester that the idea of Harry Potter occurred to her .However, in December of that year, Rowling’s mother died, and devastated she moved to Porto,Portugal to teach English .There, on 16 October 1992, she married Portuguese television journalist Jorge Arantes. Their one child, Jessica Isabel Rowling Arantes (named after Jessica Mitford), was born on 27 July 1993 in Portugal. They separated in November 1993.In December 1993, Rowling and her daughter moved to be near her sister in Edinburgh, Scotland. During this period Rowling was diagnosed with clinical depression, and contemplated suicide.. After Jessica’s birth and the separation from her husband, Rowling had left her teaching job in Portugal. In order to teach in Scotland she would need a postgraduate certificate of education (PGCE), requiring a full-time, year-long course of study. She began this course in August 1995, after completing her first novel while having survived on welfare.
After publishing her 7 books J. K. Rowling has honorary degrees from Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, US, University of Exeter, University of St Andrews, Napier University, Edinburgh, and University of Edinburgh. She was awarded an OBE for her services to children’s literature in 2001, and became an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2002.Moreover she was grated with the distinction of Scotland’s Most Powerful Woman (a title bestowed by The Scotsman)
She has written ten books, of which there are 400 million in print in over 63 countries worldwide
Jo’s books have brought her tremendous wealth; she is one of the richest women in Britain, with some analysts projecting she will become a billionaire by the time the Potter series has run its course. She gives large amounts of money to charity.
